Day by day
The same Grace which starts us off on the Quest carries us through to its end. The Short Path phase begins when we awaken to the presence of the Grace's source.
15.23.4.80Listen 1 Apr 2019He is happy even though he has no blessed consciousness of the Overself, no transcendental knowledge of it, but only secondhand news about it. Why, then, is he happy? Because he knows that he has found the way to both consciousness and knowledge. He is content to wait, working nevertheless as he waits; for if he remains faithful to the quest, what other result can there be than attainment? Even if he has to wait fifty years or fifty lifetimes, he will and must gain it.
15.24.1.93Listen 2 Apr 2019Listening to someone else's teaching, or reading it, will only be a temporary makeshift until the day when he can establish communication with his own intuitive self and receive from it the teaching which he, as a unique individual, needs. From no other source can he get such specially suitable instruction.
2.1.3.277Listen 3 Apr 2019The holy feelings generated by the Glimpse ought to be protected against the world's disintegrating power and shielded against your own tendency to dissipate them by hasty violent movements or needless irrelevant chatter.
14.22.7.12Listen 4 Apr 2019With the glimpse a feeling overspreads his heart of benevolence towards all living creatures--not only human but also animal and not only animal but even plant. He would not, could not knowingly harm a single one. The Christians call this love, the Buddhists compassion, the Hindus oneness. My own term is goodwill, but all are right…
14.22.6.94, ExcerptListen 5 Apr 2019His quest has reached its end when the ego, by the Overself's grace, has come at long last to desire fully and attain successfully its own extinction rather than, as before, its own aggrandizement.
6.8.4.362Listen 6 Apr 2019… The lack of spiritual reverence and the lowness of moral tone, the ignorance of karmic consequences and the violence of greed and hatred--these are the things today which are immensely dangerous to humanity …
13.20.2.48, ExcerptListen 7 Apr 2019Scott in his search for the South Pole amid ice-bound Antarctic wastes and Smythe in his quest for the summit of Mount Everest amid terrible avalanches of stone and snow, reported in their written accounts the sense of not being alone, of being companioned by a mystic unseen presence which bestowed a strange calm… What was the mystic presence which walked beside these men..? That power was nothing less than the Grace of the Overself…
15.23.6.86, ExcerptListen 8 Apr 2019If life is a drama put on the stage of this planet for us (and others) to play in, then karma is the audience, the witness of it all.
6.9.3.18Listen 9 Apr 2019The adverse force present in his ego will continually try to draw him away from positive concentration on pure being into negative consideration of lower topics. Each time he must become aware of what is happening, of the change in trend, and resist it at once. Out of this wearying conflict will eventually be born fresh inner strength if he succeeds, but only more mental weakness if he fails. For meditation is potently creative.
15.23.8.117Listen 10 Apr 2019Dissociate yourself from the person who has to go through with the dream-drama of life. He is forced to act, but you can inwardly practise this dissociation.
15.24.3.213Listen 11 Apr 2019Each man discovers afresh for himself this homey old truth, that he has a sacred soul. He need not wait for death to discover it or depend solely on the words of dead prophets until then.
2.1.2.159Listen 12 Apr 2019One should seek for knowledge of the Higher Laws governing life, for true purity of character, and for humility if he wishes to reach the Highest Truth.
13.20.3.64Listen 13 Apr 2019Let him walk forward slowly or quickly, as suits him best, and also in his own way, again as suits his individuality which he has fashioned through the reincarnations to its present image and from which he has to begin and proceed farther.
2.1.5.194Listen 14 Apr 2019Lao Tzu said, Do nothing by self-will but rather conform to heaven's will, and everything will be done for you. The whole of the quest may be summed up as an attempt to put these wise words into practice…
3.2.9.65, ExcerptListen 15 Apr 2019All our thoughts necessarily exist in the successiveness of time, but the thought of the ego is a more complicated affair and exists also in time and space, because the body is part of the ego. Whatever we do, the ego as such will continue its existence. But we need not identify ourselves with it; we can put some distance between us and it. The more we do so, the more impersonal we shall become, and vice versa.
6.8.2.49Listen 16 Apr 2019… What is the secret? It is contact with the Overself, Grace.
14.22.5.96, ExcerptListen 17 Apr 2019Each comes to the front of the stage, plays out his allotted role, and moves away…All mankind become a company of actors, appearing in play after play, each story different, each part acted in a new body.
6.9.2.204, ExcerptListen 18 Apr 2019When a man has come to the end of his tether, dry of all hope for accomplishment of his aim by self-effort, he is ripe for the Grace-invoking effort of the Short Path.
15.23.4.166Listen 19 Apr 2019Where a man is ready for this Quest but stubbornly clings to his old familiar way of thought and life, the Overself may or may not release karma that will tear him away from it…
2.1.2.175, ExcerptListen 20 Apr 2019The process of dying may become a fulfilment of long years of aspiration for the quester…
6.9.1.95, ExcerptListen 21 Apr 2019When he has brought the host of conflicting emotions to rest, when he has trained the thoughts to obedience, when he has fought and beaten the ego itself, he comes to a state of peace.
2.1.5.368Listen 22 Apr 2019Deep dreamless sleep removes anxieties from the mind because it removes the ego which suffers them. It removes exhaustion from the physical body because the complete relaxation of tension consequent upon the ego's absence allows the universal life-force to permeate every cell.
13.19.3.98Listen 23 Apr 2019Just as a shadow bespeaks a light, so the ego bespeaks its source in the Overself.
6.8.1.138Listen 24 Apr 2019He feels that he has touched something that always was even before his own body appeared on earth, something primeval and boundless.
15.23.8.134Listen 25 Apr 2019It is easy to recognize some of the attachments from which he must loose himself--the greeds, the lusts, and the gluttonies--but it is not so easy to recognize the subtler ones. These start with attachment to his own ideas, his own beliefs; they end with attachment to his own ego.
6.8.4.380Listen 26 Apr 2019He should learn to recognize that these moments, which come so suddenly and so delightfully, have a special value. As soon as they come he ought to suspend all activities, put aside whatever it is that he is doing, even stop what he is speaking, and concentrate all his attention in a passive submissive way upon the delicate feelings and deep understanding that come with them.
14.22.5.111Listen 27 Apr 2019If the independence of the philosophic position stops him from speaking for any particular established religion or mystical cult, it allows him to view all religions and all cults with fairness and detachment.
2.1.3.147Listen 28 Apr 2019How can the human race avoid the fate of being slaughtered in war when it itself slaughters so many innocent creatures in peace?
4.5.3.157Listen 29 Apr 2019… We live in times when the old evil forces are so active only because they feel the approach of new and good ones.
13.20.2.19, ExcerptListen 30 Apr 2019
